Prevalence of Ocular Abnormalities in Term Infants

Objective: To exhibit the results of routine ophthalmologic screening in infants between 0-1 years age referred to ophthalmology clinic from departments pediatrics and family medicine. Method: Referred August 2014 November 2019, 11196 eyes 5598 term were retrospectively investigated study, all participants ophthalmologically examined at 1st, 6th, 12th months age. Infants’ pupils dilated with 0.5% tropicamide 2.5% phenylephrine. On examination, eye face symmetries evaluated inspection, fixation, ocular tracking. Pupil responses motility light source. While red reflex test was using a direct ophthalmoscope, fundus assessed through an indirect ophthalmoscope. Results: Congenital cataract (6), congenital glaucoma (3), strabismus (81), epiphora (426), non-specific retinal hemorrhages (42) pigmentation changes (10), coloboma (4) (one eyelid, four iris, one optical disc three chorioretinal), optic abnormalities ptosis (13) (unilateral 12 patients bilateral patient), corneal dysgenesis (2) microphthalmia (3) determined (2709 females, 2889 males). Conclusion: Perinatal program is likely diagnose several diseases earlier, such as cataracts, glaucoma, strabismus, opacities, causing vision losses infants. Treatment options are available, some can be treated due early intervention. Early treatment also eliminate problems precluding development complex visual ability continuing perinatal period. Consequently, final acuity may increased.
